Senior
Being a senior in high school can be bittersweet with all the last first times and preparing for what you’re planning to do the next year. You try and capture every moment from games, and laughing at friends in class into a crisp memory. One out of the 23 students in Hills-Beaver Creek's senior class Logan Leuthold was chosen to be interviewed by me. We covered being a senior from the questions your relatives always ask you at Christmas dinner to looking back at memorable moments throughout his high school career.
Going to college at SDSU for animal science, Logan is nervous but mostly excited to experience something different. Something different from the small town of hills to city of Brookings, and just seeing new faces.
You’ve been told since the first day of highschool that senior year goes by fast and of course being the freshman you were you just brushed it off because you still have 3 years left of high school to finish before then. Logan doesn't agree with that still to this day, “It goes by as fast as any other year goes I guess”. Among the many things that are missed about high school is “Seeing friends everyday” says Logan, simple as that. Since day one you’ve seen about the same people every school year, it’ll be odd when you look around in the classroom of your college for familiar faces and see zero.
Even though it's senior year and you aren't going to be able to see the same 23 people everyday after graduation, it's going to happen and that's just apart of growing up. It's going to be scary, maybe even just a little. The reality of so much debt so quickly and the pressure of having to pick what to do for the rest of your life is a lot. In the end, it should be all worth it. Like every graduate, Logan has a little tid bit or hack to an easy going senior year, “work hard now so you don’t have to senior year”.
Making memories is a big part of high school. If you really think about it, you make memories everyday whether it be another prank made by the boys or winning a nail biter game which leads to the traditional tunnel for the team to go under. Memories are what makes highschool hard to leave and let go of, so no we will not miss all the tests and assignments even though we’ll get those in college. Picking out your most favorite memory of high school is difficult and may be close to impossible but I asked Logan what his favorite memory was and it was talking on the bench during basketball games with Fick who is a former H-BC student.
Yes, this article was basically just a whole “Leaving high school is sad” thing but at least high school was fun enough to miss it before it's even gone. Don’t take the endless days of notes, studying and semester tests for granted. You’ll end up missing waking up to sit in classrooms all day. I’m not saying that the adult life or college will be bad because honestly even though it might be scary at first, I think people love it.

Introducing Sam
Every year we get new teachers and every year we always wonder who he or she is or what they teach, they are just mysteries for the first week or two really. Ms. McGafee, here at H-BC, is a special education teacher. We interviewed McGafee to learn more about what there is to know about her.
Ms.McGafee went to college at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minnesota. Like almost everyone she enjoyed her college experience even though it was not a big school. She enjoyed the small college environment because it was not as big of a transition from high-school to college. The small class sizes she said makes it easier to get help on things or just knowing your way around the school.
McGafee didn't always want to be a teacher. In junior high and high school she wanted to be a lawyer. Later in high school, she decided she wanted to be a prenatal nurse helping with intensive care babies but things took a turn. Junior year she decided she wanted to be a teacher. If she was not a teacher she would want to be a photographer, considering she already does it as a hobby. Even though she isn't a professional, she still likes to do it for anyone who wants her to.
The thing she loves most about being a teacher is being around the kids and middle schoolers who are eager to learn, and positive. As she says, “They still like her”. Sam teaches all classes, as she is a special education teacher, but not all classes are her favorite. She loves to teach reading and novel studies the most.
Because she gets her weekends and summers off, she likes to hangout with her friends and family whether it be going somewhere with them or going to their places for a night in. She tries to keep busy reading or going to sporting events to support our Patriots.
Since everyone else is talking about this and it may be a red hot topic but what's a conversation lately without the question of “Clinton or Trump?”. I asked her what she thought about the upcoming presidential candidates and it reminded her of a meme she saw on facebook. The meme, in the simplest terms was,“Clinton and Trump are like parents getting a divorce and the kid just wants to live with grandma."In all seriousness she just thinks most people probably don't like the candidates too much so you just have to go with what they value.
She may not be a teacher of mine here at H-BC, but she always makes sure when she sees us, to say hi and put a smile on our faces.
